Teaching responsibility and preparing students for the real world: 20 alternatives to homework

Does homework really teach students responsibility? Are the assignments we send home preparing students for the real world? Educators shared their thoughts and ideas for alternatives to traditional homework.

Homework is a hot button topic. It ignites strong emotions and there are people firmly planted on both sides of the fence.

Many educators claim that homework teaches students responsibility and prepares them for the real world.

But does it really? Are there more meaningful ways that we can teach these skills in school?

In a recent #Ditchbook chat, moderated by David Carruthers and Sue Bruyns, educators shared their thoughts on ditching homework and what we can do instead.

Below you will find 20 alternatives to traditional homework assignments. Also be sure to check out this Wakelet collection to see the whole discussion including thoughts on getting parents on board with ditching traditional homework.

Did you miss this last chat on ditching homework? Don’t worry! David and Sue will be back to moderate #Ditchbook for part two of our Ditch That Homework chat on Thursday, November 29th.
