About Ditch That Textbook’s Matt Miller

Matt tossing book forward Technology is changing the world, and it’s changing our schools and classrooms.

Learning is only a Google search or YouTube video away.

The role of the teacher is changing in light of this, and you want to make sure you keep up.

You just don’t have enough time to keep up with everything. You’re looking for some new, creative ways use technology and keep students engaged.

Don’t worry. You’re in the right place.

I’m Matt Miller, and I know exactly how you feel. It’s my passion to equip teachers to thrive in this new era of education and think differently about the craft of teaching.

  • dtt front coverI spent more than a decade in the classroom, creating unique learning experiences for my students through technology and creative teaching.
  • I wrote the book Ditch That Textbook about innovative teaching ideas and rethinking education.
  • I’m a Google-Certified Innovator, one of roughly 1,000 in the United States.
  • I’ve been named one of the top 10 influencers in educational technology and elearning worldwide.

Recently, I’ve switched my focus from encouraging students to encouraging teachers. I provide practical, “use it in class tomorrow” solutions to teachers’ classroom needs. I also help them focus on what’s most important to keep education relevant.

I write regularly at my blog, “Ditch That Textbook,” and provide engaging keynotes and hands-on workshops, conferences sessions and professional development to schools, school districts, conferences and events.

I’m not all about ditching textbooks, though.

family picIn fact, I was a newspaper reporter before I got into teaching. After spending some time in my wife’s classroom (she’s a junior high social studies teacher), I found my calling — education. I went back to school four months after I graduated and started Spanish teaching in a small high school.

A few years ago, I had to scratch the writing itch that laid dormant as I taught and I started my blog, “Ditch That Textbook.” Since then, it’s been viewed hundreds of thousands of times with thousands of subscribers in more than 200 countries.

I’m happily married to my college sweetheart and live in the wooded, quiet countryside of West Central Indiana. We have three fun-loving children, two dogs and a mortgage. I’m blessed beyond measure and living the dream.

If you’re looking for something more official, here’s the standard “write in third person” bio:

ditch keynote 3Matt Miller is a teacher, blogger and presenter from West Central Indiana. He has infused technology and innovative teaching methods in his classes for more than 10 years. He is the author of the book Ditch That Textbook: Free Your Teaching and Revolutionize Your Classroom and writes at the Ditch That Textbook blog about using technology and creative ideas in teaching. He is a Google Certified Innovator, Bammy! Top to Watch in 2016, and winner of the WTHI-TV Golden Apple Award. Onalytica named him one of the top 10 influencers in educational technology and elearning worldwide.

After trying to do the traditional “teach by the textbook” for a few years, he launched into a textbook-less path where learning activities were often custom-produced for his students as well as infused with technology. He likes the results a lot, and his students do, too.

Matt has presented to thousands of teachers at dozens of workshops on a number of topics related to educational technology, world language instruction and more. He combines a conversational, engaging speaking style with loads of resources, leaving teachers equipped and inspired to move forward.

  1. I enjoyed reading your book! I will definitely share some of the points to ponder with my new educators once the new school year begins. I am the liaison for the new educator support system at my school and also a 5th grade teacher in South Florida for 34 years! I love to learn alongside my students and your book has given me some new ideas and thoughts to think about during the summer.

  2. Hi Matt,
I saw your presentation last spring at Google Summit in Mooresville, IN. Shortly after that, we purchased your book and have been sharing it all the time with our teachers. Just wanted to say I was happy to hear about your new opportunities to share your ideas with the world! Have fun!

  3. Matt, I enjoyed reading a bit about you; I was exposed to you a bit at #MACUL16. I think your theme of Ditch That Textbook is very timely and relevant in our current educational landscape for a variety of reasons.

I teach fully online and we don’t use textbooks, but I was drawn to the fact that you are a Christ-following world language teacher who’s introverted! There are not many of us, you know. 🙂 If there’s any way collaboration could help in the future, please don’t hesitate to contact me.

  4. I teach first grade and I am currently reading your book. I do have 1:1 Chromebooks in my room that we use every day BUT I am tied down to specific guidelines of what to teach most of the day. I know that 6 year olds need the basics however, I have never seen anything in writing that puts an age on what is reasonable for students this age. What should be expected from 1st graders in order to get them on the track to future success?

  6. Hello, I’m a student at the university taking the course of education.
I read your posts and I find them very useful. Furthermore, I like the idea of “ditching the books” since I’m working on this topic and I really like the new ways of teaching you suggest.
    Thank you!
